Yes, it is true fall is for planting! Many people are unaware that it is a wonderful time to plant. Most tend to only think of spring as a planting time, and they miss out on the opportunity to take full advantage of the fall planting season.
When it comes to perennials it is best to have them in the ground at least 4 weeks before a frost, with a healthy dose of mulch for protection. What about those of us who took advantage of some of the great deals at the nursery the last couple weeks and have not planted? Many suggest that if you plant your plants just little deeper than normal that plants are better off in the ground than out of it.
Why you ask?
- The soil is warm, soft and workable which is excellent for root growth. Even when the temperatures drop to freezing, below-the-ground temperatures will usually stay above 40 into December/January.
- Cool air temperature minimizes transplant shock.
- Higher precipitation in the fall causes the soil moisture to be more plentiful.
- Insects are going dormant so you have less of a chance for your new plants to be infected.
When it comes to trees and bushes you can plant up until the ground freezes. Dig a wide, shallow hole two to three times the size of the root-ball so that the root can spread out. We have learned this to be the optimum way of planting as the cause of death of newly planted trees is usually planting them too deep. Do not forget to add mulch as well for protection from the elements. You will find trees and bushes planted in the fall are better equipped to deal with heat and drought in the following season.
