General Motors Adding 1,200 Assembly Plant Jobs
A second shift will be added to meet the demand for five vehicles produced at the Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly Plant.

General Motors is adding more than 1,200 jobs to a new second shift at the, the automaker said in announcement Thursday.
Hiring is under way for the new jobs, which will be added early next year, doubling the number of employees at the plant to 2,800, The Detroit News reports.

The added workers are needed to meet demands for the five vehicles the plant produces — the Chevrolet Volt plug-in hybrid electric vehicle, Chevrolet Impala, Chevrolet Malibu and Cadillac ELR, plus a Cadillac CT6 luxury sedan to be added in early 2016.
“This is the result of the award-winning vehicles Detroit-Hamtramck produces and the confidence GM has in our team to build world-class quality for our customers,” plant manager Gary West said in a statement.

Plant spokeswoman Courtney Zemke said some of the workers will be hired from outside the plant, but did not have a breakdown yet on how many jobs would be hourly versus salaried.
The announcement is the second by GM in less than two weeks. On Oct. 13, the automaker announced it was taking applications for hundreds of of entry-level hourly positions at its Spring Hill Assembly plant to accommodate production of a new 2017 Cadillac XT5.
