ICE Arrests Multiple Parents Near Bus Stop In Southeast MI: Sheriff

Officials urged Michigan lawmakers to pass legislation to protect "sensitive locations," such as schools from ICE activity.

YPSILANTI, MI — U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers arrested multiple people at a Ypsilanti bus stop near a school Monday, according to officials.

Washtenaw County Sheriff Alyshia M. Dyer said the arrests happened near a bus stops in Ypsilanti. She said it appears "parents connected to local schools were targeted at a bus stop in Ypsilanti during student drop-off times."

It was unclear how many people were arrested. Dyer noted it can be difficult to confirm who was arrested and when because ICE does not provide advance notice and does not contact local law enforcement.

"I am continuing to seek answers in partnership with our local leaders and schools," Dyer said. "Children deserve to feel safe traveling to and from school, and actions like these can undermine that sense of security and cause lasting harm."

Superintendent of Ypsilanti District Schools Alena Zachery-Ross said the district does not voluntarily work with ICE, nor grant them access to school buildings or property without a warrant.

"There are no words to fully capture the pain, fear and disruption this causes for our scholars and their loved ones," Zachery-Ross said. "To see our families targeted in this way is a violation of the sense of safety that every member of our community deserves."

She went on to say district officials are working with the sheriff's office to monitor school sites. They are also working with the Washtenaw County Intermediate School District to support the students and their families who were involved in the situation.

"We will continue to advocate for your safety, your dignity, and your right to an education free from fear," she said.

Dyer also advocated for a pair of Michigan Senate Bills, 508–510, which she says aims to protect "sensitive locations," such as schools, hospitals, and places of worship, from immigration enforcement actions.

"I strongly hope these bills are supported to provide clearer protections and additional safeguards for our communities," Dyer said.
