Murder-Suicide Attacker Did Not Threaten, and Other Big News Near You

Livonia Police said they have no indications Brian Douglas White, 19, was violent before he killed his ex-girlfriend's mother and new boyfriend with an axe before taking his own life, the Observer & Eccentric reported.

Police told the Observer that White entered a home Wednesday morning, before apparently assaulting his ex-girlfriend’s mother, Angela Kim Staperfene, 46, and the girl’s current boyfriend, Jacob Lee Burns, 19, with an axe and then taking his own life.

Staperfene's 17-year-old daughter, a senior at Stevenson High School in Livonia, was injured during the altercation, the Observer reported. She has since been released from the hospital.

Police said there were no personal protection orders or calls about White, and that the breakup between White and Staperfene's daughter had happened a couple of weeks before.

Farmington Hills man lobbies for K-9 Veterans Day

In addition to helping organize a K-9 Veterans Day celebration at the South Lyon Township memorial this year, Farmington Hills' Ken Reynolds pushed for a proclamation signed by Gov. Rick Snyder declaring the very first K-9 Veterans Day in Michigan, . He now spends as much as eight hours a day on research and lobbying members of Michigan's congressional delegation for federal legislation that will recognize K-9 veterans — dogs who serve in combat. 

Reynolds said another bill is in the works to ensure that when someone wants to adopt a military dog that is still overseas but no longer in service, the government will cover travel costs, so the dogs have a chance of getting "a forever home," rather than being euthanized.

Novi woman killed in head-on collision

A 34-year-old woman from Novi died after her Oldsmobile crashed head-on into a Dodge Ram pick-up truck, according to Novi Patch.

At about 1:20 p.m. Tuesday, the received a call advising of a car accident on Pontiac Trail near West Park Drive. Novi Police officers responded to the scene and determined the woman's car was traveling west on Pontiac Trail when it struck the Dodge Ram pick-up, which was traveling east.

Livonia native gets point in NHL debut

Livonia native Torey Krug tallied his first NHL point Thursday night when he earned a third-period assist to help the Boston Bruins defeat the Ottawa Senators, 3-1. According to the Observer & Eccentric, Krug logged 15 minutes and 57 seconds on the ice including 2:09 on the power play and 0:46 on the penalty kill.
