Open House at Canton-Plymouth Mettetal Airport

There will be an Open House at Canton-Plymouth Mettetal Airport on Saturday, September 27th from 10:00 AM until 3:00 PM

September is Michigan Aviation Month in the State of Michigan. In celebration, the Canton-Plymouth Mettetal Airport will be hosting an open house on Saturday, September 27, 2014, from 10:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m.

The new manager of the Canton-Plymouth Mettetal Airport, Jim Morency, announced a great lineup of free activities. Morency said, “The day will be a special opportunity to learn about general aviation along with engine and airframe job possibilities for the future. We will have some vintage aircraft and plenty of static educational displays.”

The airport will have helicopter flights available along with information on the EAA #113, “Young Eagles Introduction Flights”. There will be a wide assortment of historic model airplanes and remote controlled airplanes that will be showcased. The Michigan Institute of Aviation Technology will have a booth as will the Yankee Air Museum.

Aviation ambassador, Chuck Gaidica, will open the event and share with interested general aviation buffs new meteorology advancements and services. The software available at the Mettetal Airport to help pilots make flight plans and eliminate thunderstorm vectors, icing and turbulence risks will also be showcased.

Information regarding flight lessons will be available from Solo Aviation. There will be folks on hand to answer questions on the rich aviation history of Michigan. Longtime music fixtures at Plymouth Station 885, Wally Gibson and Joe LeGraci will perform. Lunch will be available with featured chef Tommy Sekmistrz from the Eldorado Catering Company.

I attended this event last year, and thoroughly enjoyed myself. It’s an opportunity to talk to plane owners, see some planes up close, and maybe even enjoy a helicopter ride.

The event will also be an opportunity for students to see if aviation might be in their wheelhouse for a future career.
