While it might seem difficult to teach a world language outside a traditional classroom, one teacher (and her students) at the Plymouth-Canton Educational Park have made a smooth transition and haven’t missed a beat. Stacey Aksman has been teaching district students in grades eight through 12 the Chinese language for many years, and this veteran teacher has kept her young learners engaged and motivated since the quarantine began.

Using video conferencing and the whiteboard screen or sharing feature, Aksman has been able to deliver lessons in her Chinese Level I, II and III sections with similar results to what she gets in her Canton High School classroom. While she doesn’t meet daily with students, she gives assignments and checks in on them regularly to make sure they understand the lessons and are advancing toward the goal of mastering the language.

Anjana is in Level I and is writing the date for a homework assignment. Students are required to write it out, and read it on video or audio so Aksman is certain they understand.

Here is a screenshot of student Nathan in Level II writing different times of day for his homework assignment.
Thanapa, a Level III student, is drawing, which illustrates reading selections she had to recite out loud about "cleaning your room,"

Finally, there is a screenshot of Aksman teaching Level III students Chinese grammar structure with the video conferencing whiteboard feature.

While she would prefer to be back in the classroom, Aksman is getting the job done in this new environment. Like many Plymouth-Canton Community Schools instructors, she has a passion for her subject and a creative mind that has developed a new way to deliver the lessons.
