P-CCS Home Learning Highlight For Thursday

When COVID-19 disrupted P-CCS, it was a super-easy transition for this teacher's students since they already worked online.

Home Learning Highlight for May 28, 2020
P-CEP Teacher Jeff Blakeslee

For Plymouth-Canton Educational Park students in Jeff Blakeslee’s Hybrid Advanced Composition, Advanced Science Fiction Literature, ADELA (a team-taught collaboration of ELA and CTE), and Humanities classes, the “transition” to online learning wasn’t transitional at all. Blakeslee had blended his courses years ago, basically presenting them as online classes with the added benefit of being able to meet in-person.

Students log-in to MyClasses (Moodle) and everything is there for them to succeed including a daily calendar for the semester, links to assignments, links for other help including videos, portfolio links, weekly update links, and assignment submission links. His AdvSciFi course even has step-by-step instructions.

Over the years, Blakeslee has had many students work completely from home (due to health and other issues) and a few students who have completed the course early to have extra time during AP testing season. He also has taught the Hybrid Advanced Composition course for six years where students only come to class when he needs them; otherwise, work is done at home, online.

When COVID-19 disrupted us, it was a super-easy transition for Blakeslee’s students since they were already used to working online at their own pace. All he had to do was schedule Zoom meetings once a week to check-in and answer questions; this allowed for more “Lunch Room” meets where students were simply allowed to vent and bond from home. Blakeslee did add a couple of Ted Talks as well and posted these to supplement what had been lost in the classroom. He also created and shared examples of assignments along with his students such as book talk on the novel Old Man’s War by John Scalzi. (video, 10 min)

Not even the Coronavirus can stop the innovative teaching and learning in Blakeslee’s classes. That’s why he is one of P-CEP’s best.
