P-CCS Home Learning Highlight For Wednesday

Home Learning Highlight for June 3, 2020
Starkweather Teacher JJ Lockwood

The quarantine created numerous challenges for Plymouth-Canton Community Schools teachers and students, but many saw it as an opportunity. Take Starkweather teacher JJ Lockwood for example. He teaches Web Design, Graphic Applications, and two Senior Seminar classes: Manufacturing and Jobs for Michigan Grads, and not being in the classroom created some technology obstacles that tested his creativity.

Lockwood currently teaches students who are in grades 9-12 credit wise, and when they are in his classroom at Starkweather, they use a Google Site paired with hands-on demonstrations and videos. When school shifted to at home learning, he switched to Google Classroom, virtual demonstrations and video examples. Now there is a great deal of screen sharing and one-on-one meetings with Web Design students so they can see the code work on Lockwood’s screen. If students are having an issue, they can share their screen with the teacher who provides individual assistance.

In his Graphic Applications class, students primarily use Photoshop software on most assignments. Because this software is expensive and only available for students in his classroom, Lockwood has been focusing on content that allows students to use whatever digital art software they have available. One assignment asked students to draw a series of portraits of people who are important to them. Some used apps on phones and tablets, while others used Microsoft Paint. It became more about technique and expression than software, changing the way this teacher organized assignments and delivered his coursework.

Lockwood is getting the job done in less than ideal conditions. And he is one more example of the creative, hardworking P-CCS teachers that are making the most of this tough situation.
