West Seventh Grade Book Club - Milkweed
Working from home isn’t stopping West Middle School 7th grade students in Lauren Horvath and Robert Watson’s ELA classes from learning about history and literature. The classes are reading Milkweed, a great book by author Jerry Spinelli that details the tragic events of the Warsaw ghetto during the Holocaust through the eyes of a child.

Horvath suggested reading chapters aloud, recording it on Zoom and posting it to Google Classroom for students to listen to whenever it was convenient. West Principal, Clint Smiley, as well as other West teachers were invited as “guest readers” to keep the experience fresh for students.
Watson reached out to the author via email to see if he might be willing to interact with West students and got a quick and very positive reply. Spinelli was delighted to hear that the book was being shared in this way and generously offered to answer questions directly from West students. This “Virtual Book Club” will be conducted over the remaining weeks of the school year.
