Pedestrians in Area With Little Crime Targeted in Violent Attacks

Police said the attacks by a group of men – four in the last week – are a reminder to be vigilant about surroundings.

Police in Wayne are warning residents it has received reports of a group of men violently attacking pedestrians, according to a report on WDIV-TV.

Two attacks were reported on both Sunday and Wednesday. Victims run the gamut of young to old and men and women. Robbery is the apparent motive of the men.

The attacks occurred in the Attwood Park and Westwick Square Cooperative areas, which typically have little or no crime, police said.

Police said the attacks aren’t armed robberies. Instead, the suspects – usually three to six at a time – approach the victims from behind and pummel them until they relinquish their purses or wallets.

Wayne Police Chief Alan Maciag said the attacks are a reminder for people to be “vigilant and aware of their surroundings.” He reminded residents to keep their cell phones handy and avoid walking alone.The men are described as black and between the ages of 18-20. They are believed to be driving a silver Chevrolet Cavalier or Cobalt. The attacks occur as dusk turns to night, police said.
