Plymouth-Canton Approves Schools of Choice Resolution

Up to 250 Wayne County students in kindergarten through fifth grade can apply. Other opportunities extended as well.

PLYMOUTH-CANTON, MI – Up to 250 kindergarten through fifth grade students from other Wayne County school districts will be able to attend Plymouth-Canton Community Schools in 2016-2017 after the school board approved a Schools of Choice resolution.

The resolution approved by trustees also allows an opportunity for sixth- through 11th-grade siblings of the applicants to enroll in the district, and opens 20 seats — 10 each for ninth and 10th grades — in the P-CEP International Baccalaureate Programme.

The measure wasn’t passed unanimously. School board trustee Mike Maloney, who cast the lone dissenting vote, called the idea “short-sighted,” but others — including interim Superintendent Monica Merritt — disagreed, The Observer reports.

“Students enrolled through our previous school of choice programs have a proven track record of success in terms of academic performance, and they have made positive contributions to the learning environment in our district,” Merritt said.
