Plymouth Twp. Teen Gets 10-20 Years In Plot to Kill Family

Roksana Sikorski's parents pleaded for leniency for their daughter, who they said "fell under spell" of older boyfriend.

PLYMOUTH TOWNSHIP, MI – A teenager whose parents said she fell under the spell of an older man and plotted to murder four members of her family was sentenced to 10 to 20 years in prison Monday by a Wayne County Circuit Court judge.

Roksana Sikorski, 16, pleaded guilty last month to one count of assault with intent to commit murder after she cut her brother’s neck with a knife in October 2014. In exchange for her plea, six other felony counts against her were dropped.

Sikorski tearfully apologized to her family before hearing the sentence from Wayne County Circuit Judge James Callahan.

Callahan said the circumstances of the teen’s crime are “extremely bizarre,” the Detroit Free Press reports.

“This is truly an unfortunate situation,” he said.

Sikorski’s older boyfriend, Michael Angelo Rivera, 24, was convicted in August and sentenced to life in prison without parole for his role in a conspiracy that prosecutors had described as "truly haunting."

Prosecutors said that when Sikorski sliced her brother’s throat in the early morning hours of Oct. 17, 2014, she received instructions from Rivera via the Kik app, which allows for anonymous communication. Rivera's instructions reportedly included anatomical images of where the wounds should be inflicted, according to court documents.

Rivera also pleaded guilty to a third-degree criminal sexual conduct charge that stemmed from a July 2014 incident with Sikorski, whose adoptive parents, Jeffrey and Laurene Sikorski, had argued the two would never have hatched the murderous plot if he had been arrested sooner.

Jeffrey Sikorski, an automotive engineer, told The Detroit News tht he contacted Plymouth Township police in the summer of 2014 because he suspected his daughter and Rivera had become intimate after the two met on Facebook.

The teen's father said nothing much came from the initial report. When an arrest warrant was finally issued, more than 11 weeks had passed since the initial report, according to the Free Press.

Sikorski’s parents also had argued it was inappropriate for the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office to charge their daughter as an adult because she suffered from post-traumatic stress syndrome after enduring horrific abuse in her biological home in Poland. They adopted Sikorski and her two siblings more than a decade ago.

Laurene Sikorski, a nurse anesthetist and health-care manager, described her daughter as a “loving” girl who “fell under (Rivera’s) spell.”

However, Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy said after Sikorski and Rivera’s arrest in October 2014 that the facts of the case warranted the teen’s trial in adult court.

"Bluntly, it is rare for this office to charge a 15-year-old as an adult. However, the alleged facts in this case strongly warrant this decision," Worthy said at the time.
