Plymouth Whalers Win Saturday Shootout, 2-1, Over Saginaw

Two players the Plymouth Whalers are depending on to provide offensive punch provided just that in the Whalers’ 2-1 shootout victory over Saginaw in an Ontario Hockey League preseason game played Saturday night at Compuware Arena.
Mathew Campagna and Sonny Milano scored the only goals in the shootout for the Whalers, while Plymouth goaltender Alex Nedeljkovic stopped Saginaw’s Dylan Sadowy and Artem Artemov.

Plymouth is now 2-2-0-0 in the preseason; Saginaw has a victory in regulation to go with two shootout losses in the preseason.
The teams traded a one power play goal aside over sixty minutes. Francesco Vilardi scored a power play goal at 14:36 of the first period to give the Whalers a 1-0 lead. Victor Crus Rydberg and Will Bitten drew assists.

Crus Rydberg sharted the play and found Bitten at the left corner, who worked the puck out of the corner and found Vilardi in front of the Saginaw goal. Vilardi faked through traffic, got Saginaw goaltender Nikita Serebryakov to commit, and scored with a forehand, mid-shelf.
Both teams had good moments through the second period with the Whalers outshooting Saginaw, 11-10 , while holding on to the lead.
Sagianw tied the game at 1-1 at 7:50 of the third period when rookie defenseman Marcus Crawford snapped a shot from the top of the right circle past Nedeljkovic. Jimmy Lodge drew the only assist on the play.
Both goaltenders played well. Nedeljkovic stopped 32-of-33 shots for the Whalers; Nikita Serebryakov stopped 28-of-29 shots for Saginaw.
All considered (preseason), the game was well-played with plenty of good flow from both teams.
Plymouth scratches included Zack Bowman, Alex Peters, Liam Dunda, Cullen Mecer, Yannick Rathgeb and Brook Hiddink. Saginaw scratches were Joseph Murdaca, Brandon Prophet, Ryan Orban and Luke Cairns.
Plymouth completes the preseason next Friday in Guelph, with the home opener set for Sat. Sept. 27 against Erie at 7:05 pm at Compuware Arena.
