Popular Metro Detroit Pierogi Shop Back Open Under New Ownership

The new owner assured customers can expect handmade pierogi with more than 20 flavors.

LIVONIA, MI — A popular Wayne County pierogi shop is back open under new ownership.

Lila’s Pierogi, located on Five Mile Road near Inkster Road in Livonia, reopened last June after a brief shutdown.

Local entrepreneur and real estate broker Paul Mychalowych told Patch that acquiring Lila’s was both a strategic and personal decision.

"Lila’s has something you can’t manufacture — a deep emotional connection with the community," Mychalowych said. "When the opportunity came up, it wasn’t just about buying a business. It was about preserving a local legacy and building the next chapter."

Drawing from his Eastern European roots, Mychalowych says continuing the handmade traditions that has devolped a devoted customer base across Metro Detroit was non-negotiable.

"My family is Ukrainian, and I grew up around the same style of thin dough and handmade recipes," he said. "We’ve stayed true to what made Lila’s special while investing in growth, quality, and long-term sustainability."

The shop continues to feature its signature handmade pierogi, including fan favorites like potato and cheese, sauerkraut, bacon and onion, roast beef, and rotating specialty flavors — all produced using the original recipes that built Lila’s loyal following.

Mychalowych says honoring that loyalty has been central to the relaunch.

"Lila built an incredible 22-year reputation and a very passionate customer base," he said. "Our goal is to protect that trust while making the brand even more accessible to the next generation of customers."

Mychalowych also has ambitious plans for expansion, including regional retail distribution, e-commerce growth, and potential future locations — all while maintaining the small-batch quality the brand is known for.

Lila's Pierogi was originally founded in 2004. It shut down last spring when the family decided to move to Tennessee. The family also cited rising costs and shifting customer habits in their decision to close down.
