The Recovery Project Shares Fall Prevention Tips for Local Seniors
September 23 is National Falls Prevention Awareness Day. Local rehab firm The Recovery Project is providing fall prevention tips.
Livonia-based The Recovery Project, a leading provider of physical and occupational therapy, is offering comprehensive fall prevention tips in anticipation of the National Council on Aging’s Falls Prevention Awareness Day on Tuesday, Sept. 23. The Recovery Project co-CEO and lead physical therapist Polly Swingle PT, GCS, CEEAA made the announcement.
“According to the Centers for Disease Control, falls are the leading cause of fatal and nonfatal injuries for older adults, and one in three adults over the age of 65 falls each year,” said Swingle. “In light of this startling information, The Recovery Project is dedicated to helping prevent falls in our community by sharing tips, and by offering aging and wellness fitness programs that help lessen fall risk for seniors and improve independence and overall quality of life.”
- The Recovery Project team recommends that seniors and their families take a multifaceted approach to combatting fall risk, including physical activity and environment modification.Steps to consider taking include:
- Begin a fitness routine that incorporates safe exercises focused on building strength, balance and coordination. Most community centers and physical therapy facilities offer specialized exercise programs tailored to older adults.
- If possible, work with a trained exercise expert to build a customized fitness program. Research shows that moderate to high intensity activity is needed to achieve results, and professionals can develop a safe yet effective regimen.
- Eliminate or minimize fall hazards at home. Remove boxes, cords or other loose objects from walkways; secure loose rugs or remove them completely; store items in easily accessible locations; and ensure all rooms are well lit, withlamps during the day and nightlights in the evening.·Install assistive devices at home to make getting around easier and safer. Adding handrails to stairs, a raised toilet seat with arm rests to the bathroom, a plastic seat in the shower, and more can facilitate easier mobility and performance of every day tasks.
