The social connections students make in the traditional classroom setting are an important part of their education, and that is difficult during quarantine. Tonda Elementary teachers are employing a number of methods to develop social skills while students are not together in the same space.

Third grade teacher Amy Caudill, for example, has created memory journals that highlight what students have been doing every week. Included in these are short inspirational videos, pictures and silly videos that students create and share.
Caudill also employs Nearpod lessons to help students feel connected. Nearpod is a student engagement platform that allows a teacher to create presentations that can contain quizzes, polls, videos, images, drawing-boards, and web content. These lessons are interactive and engaging.

Finally, she created “Virtual Monday Circle Up” using Flipgrid. Flipgrid is a website that allows teachers to create "grids" to facilitate video discussions. Each grid is like a message board where teachers can pose questions and their students can post video responses. This is another great way for students to stay in touch with their peers.
