Jewish University Of Michigan Student Attacked In Ann Arbor In Hate Crime: Police

Police said the 19-year-old student suffered minor injuries in the attack and did not need to be taken to the hospital.

ANN ARBOR, MI — A University of Michigan student was attacked in Ann Arbor early Sunday morning after telling a group of men that he was Jewish, according to Ann Arbor Police.

The assault happened at 12:45 a.m. Sunday morning on Hill Street and South Forest, just a few blocks away from the University of Michigan campus, according to police.

Investigators said the 19-year-old student was asked by a group of men if he was Jewish.

When the student replied "yes," the group assaulted him, according to police.

Police said the student suffered minor injuries in the attack and did not need to be taken to the hospital.

"There is absolutely no place for hate and ethnic intimidation in the City of Ann Arbor. Our department stands against antisemitism and all acts of bias-motivated crimes," Ann Arbor Police Chief Andre Anderson said. "We are committed to vigorously investigating this and other hate-motivated incidents and will work with the County Prosecutor’s office to aggressively prosecute those who are responsible."

A $5,000 reward is being offered by the Anti-Defamation League for any information leading to an arrest and conviction of those responsible for the attack.

“We urge anyone with knowledge about the incident to share it with DPSS or the Ann Arbor police department. In turn, we will ask that perpetrators be held accountable for their actions. We stand firmly against antisemitism and all bias-motivated behavior. We are committed to creating a community where every student, faculty member, staff member or visitor can thrive without the fear of threats, intimidation or violence," University of Michigan President Santa Ono said in a social media post.
