I recently heard that there are more people doing yoga in California than the whole country of India. Not sure if it's true, but it's certainly growing here in this country. Why? Yoga asana, mudras, bandhas, pranayama, and yoga nidra bring the mind, the body, the emotions, and the spirit through a full range of human experience. By slowing down and breathing, we let experiences come up. If it doesn’t come up through being still and breathing, then the physical postures break through the ice and rigidity of everyday life stored in this body to summon up relief, breath, joy, commitment, vulnerability, strength, and determination. Warrior poses establish a physical experience of fierceness needed to fight back. Back bending and heart opening poses such as Camel (ustrasana) embody the joy of being open to love and gratitude. Forward bending, as in uttanasana, commits the nervous system to a calmness and security that there is a place inside to retreat and restore. Twisting awakens the lethargic body-mind to feel alive and alert. Untimately, inversions such as headstand and shoulderstand unify the emotions and mind to find joy, love, and release. The mudras, or poses that inspire a purpose, contain an experience within themselves that we may not experience in our everyday routine. Yoga nidra or yogic sleep gives us practice in moving in and out of the good, the bad, and a range of experience with awareness- instead of avoidance. It gives us the security of the present moment, that if we just practice consciousness, then life isn’t something to be feared or avoided but to be lived and absorbed and loved to any depth you can achieve. So maybe in society today we are lacking- and ultimately finding in yoga- the range of life and emotional depth that we don’t have day in and day out. Just maybe.
