šŸ“° News we're reading

• Party Prep: Portage kids make birthday cards for America's 250th (fox17online.com) — Portage families with elementary students can join a city-sponsored contest where kids design birthday cards celebrating America’s 250th, with entries open to Portage Public Schools students through April 30. Central Elementary kids are already drawing patriotic themes, and the winning artist will receive a flag flown over either the U.S. Capitol or the Michigan State Capitol.

• Several southwest, west Michigan communities getting federal money for affordable housing (wkzo.com) — Portage is set to receive $208,331 in federal Community Development Block Grant funding to support affordable housing, alongside nearby cities like Kalamazoo and Battle Creek. The money is part of nearly $4 million coming to southwest Michigan, on top of larger statewide allocations aimed at expanding housing options for low-income households.

• Higher ed appropriations bill cutting over half of funding to MSU, U-M passes House subcommittee (newsfromthestates.com) — Major cuts to Michigan State and U-M funding are moving forward in Lansing, and Portage’s own Rep. Matt Longjohn is pushing back on related rollbacks to climate and child care programs. The higher-ed plan slashes support for Rx Kids, trims MiLEAP and community college budgets, and could raise costs for students statewide, including many from Portage.
