Couple Wins Right to Produce Ammunition in Their Home

"There's a lot more risk having cans of gas in your garage," Councilman Adam Kochenderfer says.

A Rochester HIlls couple won conditional approval from the city’s Zoning Appeals Board Wednesday to produce ammunition in their home in the 3200 block of Eastwood Drive.

Michael and Melissa Watton, owners of Archangel Armory, were originally turned down by a collective of officials of the city’s building, planning and fire departments, The Oakland Press reports.

If they’re successful, the Wattons said they eventually hope to move to a commercial space. The ammunition will be sold online to licensed gun dealers.

Under the deal reached with city officials, the Wattons will allow annual inspections by the fire department. “We wanted to know what they were looking to do,” Chief Sean Conto explained. “They’re not doing anything more than the average hobbyist.”

Rochester Hills Councilman and zoning board member Adam Kochenderfer said officials carefully reviewed the Wattons’ proposal and said it doesn’t rise to the “level of a nuisance.” City laws restricting the amount of ammunition that can be stored in a home to 50 pounds of smokeless powder.

“There’s a lot more risk having cans of gas in your garage,” Kochenderfer said. “People do a lot more dangerous things in their home all the time.”

The Wattons are the parents of two young children who live at the address.

Given that, Mayor Bryan Barnett said he’s confident “they’re going to do everything possible to run a safe operation.”
