High School Hoops: Avondale Girls Defeat Adams, Clinch Top Spot in Division

The lady Yellow Jackets got off to a 11-2 lead and never looked back.

Avondale High School Yellow Jackets came away with a 52-33 win hosting on Thursday night.

Prior to the game, Adams head coach Fran Scislowicz said they were looking for “an ESPN-style upset.”

Well, it certainly would have been an upset.

Moriah Schroll also scored four points for the Yellow Jackets in the first quarter and had eight points total for the game.

The Turning Point: The Yellow Jackets started the game with an 11-2 lead and never let Adams take the lead back.

The Quote: “With this victory we win the league outright with no chance left of tying,” Avondale head coach David Muczynski said.

Avondale also needed this win for high spirits, because Friday they play away at Detroit Country Day, the top-ranked team in the state.

“We’ve had very disciplined, crisp practices all week and we know what we need to do,” Muczynski said about Friday’s game.

The Bottom Line: The Yellow Jackets got off to a hot start taking a 11-2 lead.

Adams cut the lead down to three, but after that the game kept slipping away.

“I give them more credit for hitting shots and playing defense, it wasn’t about what we didn’t do,” Scislowicz said.

Avondale beat Adams 44-34 when they played earlier this season on Jan. 14.

Key Stat: Jessica Lang scored 10 points for Adams, hitting a 3-pointer and went 3-4 from the free throw line.

Taylor Houghtlin added another seven points with a 3-pointer for Adams.

Hannah Little led the Yellow Jackets, scoring 15 points for Avondale and shooting 1-4 from the line.

Who’s next?  Avondale, 15-1 overall and undefeated in league play, travels to Detroit Country Day Friday night at 7 p.m.

Adams (8-9) hosts Harrison tomorrow at 5:30 p.m.
