High School Hoops: Stoney Creek Eliminates Rochester to Play Adams in District Championship

Stoney Creek defeated Rochester 55-54 in a semifinal game that went down to the wire.

Rochester fell to Stoney Creek 55-54 in a district semifinal game that came down to the final minute, if not seconds.

It seemed like the lead changed hands a dozen times in the final minutes of the game because both teams continued to race down the court and put up quick points.

This is the first postseason victory in the history of Stoney Creek boy’s varsity basketball program.

The Hero: Alex Jones led the Cougars in scoring with 17 points, including three 3-pointers.

Tyler Curtis added another 16 points and made the only two free throws attempted by the Cougars the entire game.

The Turning Point: Kurt Apostol missed two free throws with the Falcons down by one point with 4.1 seconds left in the game.

The Quote: “Coming in with six wins, tonight made our season,” Stoney Creek head coach Steve Norgrove said.

“It hurts, I can’t lie about that,” Rochester head coach John Pleasant said. “But one game does not define your season.”

The Bottom Line: Rochester (16-6) won the league and put themselves in a position to win this semifinal game, but they missed too many free throws in the fourth quarter.

“Obviously missed free throws were an issue,” Pleasant said.  “But so was our rebounding in the first half.”

Stoney Creek deserved the win for one reason: they made shots when they needed to make them.

Key Stat: Rochester only made 50 percent of its free throws, shooting 9-for-18 from the line.

Taylor Perry had a huge game for the Falcons with 25 points, a 3-pointer and shot 4-for-5 from the line.

Senior William Klotz scored 16 points in his last game for the Falcons, including a 3-pointer and shot 5 of 8 from the line.

Bracketology: Stoney Creek (7-12) plays Adams for the district championship Friday at 7 p.m. at Oxford High School.

Stoney Creek lost to Adams 70-37 in their previous meeting this season.

“No one on this team expects us to have a score like we did a few weeks ago, they’re (Stoney Creek) a better team than that,” Adams head coach John Hall said.
