High School Sports: Hockey, Wrestling, Basketball and More This Week

Rochester area teams enter post-season play.

Stoney swimmers take second in OAA championships

Stoney Creek swimmers finished second over the weekend, behind Bloomfield Hills Andover, in the Oakland Activities Association 2011 boys swimming championships at on Friday.

After two days of preliminaries, Andover scored 461 points to win the championship Friday, decisively beating Stoney Creek with 415 points.

In addition to a second-place finish, Stoney Creek won four all-league team awards.

Stoney Creek swimmer Blake Adams said he knew the competition would be close. But, he said, more than just competing is the camaraderie of the night. “It’s a good, competitive friendly atmosphere,” he said.

Highlights of the evening included first-place finisher Eric Heinrich in the 50-yard freestyle and Alex Yu with a third-place in the 100-yard backstroke. Stoney Creek took the last heat of the night in the 400-yard freestyle relay with swimmers Jon Vreede, Alex Yu, Eric Heinrich and Kyle Walsh. Yu, Heinrich, Walsh and Chris Marten also took a first place in the 200-yard medley relay. Click for full results.

Boys hoops finishes regular season this week

Post-season play begins next week for boys basketball. Rochester teams have only home contests to wrap up the season this week. All games begin at 7 p.m.

  • Avondale is 15-3 and hosts two teams this week: Tuesday, Detroit Martin Luther King comes to town and Thursday they play Ferndale.
  • (14-4) plays at home against Hazel Park on Tuesday and Bloomfield Hills Lahser on Thursday.
  • plays at home against Utica Eisenhower on Tuesday and Lake Orion on Thursday.
  • (10-6) also plays at home this week: Tuesday against Troy and Thursday against Troy Athens.

Girls hoops begin post-season play this week

  • Avondale (18-2) plays Troy Athens tonight at 7:30 at Troy High School. If they win, they'll continue with games Wednesday and Friday.
  • In Lake Orion tonight, Adams (12-10) plays Lake Orion at 7.
  • At 5:30 Wednesday in Lake Orion, Rochester (3-17) plays the winner of tonight's Romeo vs. Oxford game; at 7, Stoney Creek (5-4)  plays the winner of tonight's Adams-Lake Orion game. 
  • The final will be played in Lake Orion at 7 p.m. Friday.

Hockey playoffs at Onyx

Playoffs begin this week with Division 1 pre-regionals at .

  • On Tuesday, Stoney Creek plays Utica at 6:30 p.m. The winner will play the winner of tonight's L'Anse Creuse vs. L'Anse Creuse North at 6:30 p.m. Thursday.
  • On Wednesday, Rochester United plays at 6:45 p.m. the winner of tonight's Lake Orion vs. Utica Eisenhower game.

Stoney cheerleaders try to keep state title

Stoney Creek took in Lake Orion and heads to the state playoffs this weekend. They'll perform at 6 o'clock Friday night.
