Rochester United Scores Three Goals In Third To Beat Romeo 3-1

The young Rochester United squad picked up a nice 3-1 win over Romeo in the 2012 OAA-MAC Showcase on Saturday afternoon at the
Rochester (7-12; 2-5 Oakland Activities Association Red) survived some tense moments toward the end of the second period to keep the game scoreless and burst out of intermission with a shorthanded goal to take the lead.
The team’s leading scorer, Brent Boudreau, scored a minute into the third with an unassisted shorthanded goal (:43).

It was a sigh of relief for a Rochester team who had to kill nearly five straight minutes worth of penalties. The stretch started with a call on Drew Harm with 2:43 left in the second.
“I got worried at the end of the second,” coach Craig Staskowski said.

Staskowski’s team couldn’t get Romeo out of its zone at the end of the period, but his penalty-killing line and goaltender Brody Blair prevented any shots from getting through.
“We made some bad defensive choices, took some penalties, we just wanted to get out of there and get to the locker room,” Staskowski said. “We needed to rest some of the guys we were riding at the end there.”
During the break, Rochester found a second wind and a few minutes after Boudreau broke the scoreless tie, Evan Asuncion scored (4:22) from Marshall Bowery and Tony Nassar.
“I think we out shot them 2-to-1 going into the third period, we had some good chances, but nothing got through,” said Staskowski. “Their goaltender played really good for them, but our top line stepped up.”
Romeo’s lone goal came a minute later. Jeremy Speer scored (5:25) from teammate Greg Balsam.
Kevin Kurzeja added an insurance goal for Rochester in the final minute (16:12) from Blair.
Staskowski was happy to pick up the win despite missing some key players. Rochester was without three players in its lineup on Saturday including senior captain Anthony Facca. Facca, who will be back later this month, is out with torn ligaments in his ankles.
“It’s nice to win this game,” Staskowski said. “If we start playing some good hockey now and start getting some of the pieces back, it will be nice.”
