Tisdel Seeks To Protect Social Security, Medicare

The bill calls for Congress to mitigate the depletion of the trust funds for Social Security and Medicare.

ROCHESTER HILLS, MI — The House Committee on Families, Children and Seniors on Tuesday approved State Rep. Mark Tisdel's resolution urging Congress to mitigate the depletion of the trust funds for Social Security and Medicare.

"Social Security and Medicare are on a trajectory to fail the people they were created to serve," Tisdel said. "Congress must avoid a crisis to protect benefits for people with disabilities and retirees."

The legislation says that without congressional action, trust funds will not have the resources to pay for all of Social Security benefits and Medicare costs in less than two decades.

"Projections in Social Security and Medicare trustees reports estimate that Social Security will only be able to pay 78 percent of scheduled benefits by 2034, and Medicare will only be able to pay 91 percent of full costs by 2026," the legislation says.
