15th Annual Quake-On-The-Lake Inboard Hydroplane Races Hosts the American Power Boat Association(APBA) Summer Nationals and Exciting New Attractions for People of All Ages

“Biggest Beach Party in Oakland County; Christmas in July Craft Show; Classic Car Show”


Waterford Township, MI. June19, 2014---The inboard hydroplanes, Vintage hydroplanes and the big, bad and loud Grand Prix boats return to the waters of Pontiac Lake in Waterford/White Lake Townships the weekend of July 18-20, along with some very exciting new features. The extensive menu of eclectic events promises to make the15th Annual Quake-On-The-Lake, one of Oakland County’s premier summertime events, the biggest and best one ever.

This year Quake will inaugurate the “Biggest Beach Party in Oakland County” featuring volleyball competitions, sand castle building, frisbee throwing and beach pong, a non-alcoholic event. 

To complement the beach party theme; Air Margaritaville, a Jimmy Buffet tribute band will perform Saturday night at 7 p.m. with the Swank Club steel drum band revving-up the crowd at 5:00 p.m. On Friday night the headline entertainment will be a good ole‘ dose of country music featuring Audrey Ray and Julianne Ankley and The Rogues. 

The 1st Annual Classic Car Show will showcase 80-100 of the most eye-popping vintage cars anywhere, each one rated by a panel of judges with prizes on the line. The brand new “Christmas-in-July Craft Show” will give attendees a jump on their holiday shopping with some of the most talented crafters in Michigan displaying their creative hand-made wares. This new attraction is designed to give race-goers something interesting to see and do between breaks in the racing action.

The important thing to remember is that net proceeds from Quake-On-The-Lake benefit the Rainbow Connection, a 501(c)3 charity founded by Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson in the early 1980’s that grants wishes to children with life-threatening and terminal illnesses. Over the years, the event has raised more than $100,000 for Rainbow and other charities.

The APBA has awarded the Summer Nationals to Quake-On-The-Lake for 3 consecutive years; 2014, 2015 and 2016, the first time the racing organization has bestowed that honor on any venue in North America.

Pontiac Lake is a popular venue for racers because it offers one of the fastest one-mile race courses in the nation that has produced 19 APBA records in 5 different racing classes at Quake-On-The-Lake over the past 14 years. The Grand Prize winner, the overall points champ, will be awarded the prestigious Governor’s Cup on Sunday afternoon to cap-off a fun-filled weekend of the best inboard hydroplane racing in North America.

Hours for Quake-On-The Lake are Friday, July 18 from 3 p.m. until 9 p.m.; Saturday, July 19 from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday, July 20 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Ticket prices: adults--$10; kids(5-12)--$5 and children 4 years old and younger will be admitted free of charge.

Quake-On-The-Lake is located at the Pontiac Lake State Recreation Area at M-59 and Highland/Williams Lake Roads, at the end of the Oakland County International Airport runway.
