Two Royal Oak firefighters were honored Thursday for quick action that saved a teenager’s life last August.

Firefighters Kyle Linenger and Ryan Edwards were honored in Pontiac by the Oakland County Medical Control Authority.

The two firefighters were covering for their colleagues in Southfield so they could attend the funeral of Fire Chief Keith Rowley when a call came into dispatch about a 15-year-old boy who had collapsed while playing basketball last August, according to a post on the city of Royal Oak Facebook page.

When they arrived at the scene, the teen was unresponsive and not breathing, and a bystander was performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

Linenger and Edwards, along with members of the West Bloomfield Fire Department, took over.

The patient was transported to Providence-Providence Park Hospital in Southfield and made a full recovery.
