A Royal Oak High School student’s 60-second video landed him a $10,000 scholarship in the annual Young & Free Michigan scholarship competition.Evan Gulock, who plans a career in filmmaking and television broadcast, won the scholarship for his video in the high school division of the annual competition sponsored by Michigan First Credit Union.

“Evan’s passion, talent and drive are being rewarded,” Mike Conrad, ROHS video/TV/media instructor, said in a news release. “This is a great example of an exceptional student expressing his future desire and a local business putting forth the resources to help make it a reality,”
Besides the high school video contest, the Young & Free Michigan scholarship competition also included a high school essay contest and a college video contest. Applicants were asked to create their response to a question – “How will your degree help you improve the state of Michigan?” – with a 60-second video or 300-word essay.

The top 10 applicants in each category were determined by online voting and a panel of judges chose the final winners. The top three winners in each category received a $10,000 scholarship.
