📰 News we're reading

1. Saginaw County Health Department to close Thursday morning for emergency training (mlive.com) — If you need the Saginaw County Health Department this Thursday morning, plan around a temporary closure while staff and local responders run an emergency preparedness drill. The building will be shut to the public until noon, and you may see police and fire vehicles outside as part of the exercise, but officials stress there is no real emergency and normal services resume midday.

2. Service changes taking effect at STARS Oct. 5 (wnem.com) — Saginaw bus riders will see major STARS route changes starting October 5, including combining Routes 2 and 4 into a single Route 4 and Routes 3 and 11 into a new Route 3. New and shifted stops will better serve schools, apartments, community centers, and food resources, so residents are urged to review maps and schedules before the changes take effect.

3. Three Sunday morning fires in Saginaw under investigation as suspicious (wnem.com) — Residents across Saginaw are being urged to stay alert after three early Sunday fires on South 11th Street, Grant Street, and at Fordney Park were all deemed suspicious. Fire officials, city police, and federal investigators are reviewing evidence and surveillance footage, and they're asking anyone with information or noticing unusual activity to contact the Saginaw Fire Department.

4. Saginaw council approves data center ordinance after months of planning (mlive.com) — Saginaw's City Council has unanimously approved a detailed new ordinance regulating any future data centers, aiming to protect neighborhoods while still allowing tech development. The rules require special land-use approval, strict noise and setback limits, extensive water and energy reporting, and neighborhood meetings, all while a moratorium on data center projects remains in place through the end of 2026.

5. The Salvation Army Saginaw Corps unveils newly renovated community center (midmichigannow.com) — Saginaw residents now have a refreshed Salvation Army community hub after $3 million in local donations funded major renovations to the chapel, corps center, and worship and community center. The updated space adds a new kitchen, offices, game areas, teen gaming nights, tutoring, and senior programs, with fun events like a cupcake-decorating contest helping bring neighbors back through the doors.
