In 2005, Walmart established the goal to be supplied 100 percent by renewable energy; to create zero waste; and to sell products that sustain people and the environment. Renewables and energy efficiency have long been part of Walmart’s strategy to operate at every day low cost while also allowing Walmart to be a good steward of the environment.
Since then, Walmart has been an innovator in renewable energy and increasing energy efficiency. Many metro Detroit Walmart stores include environmental features such as daylight harvesting skylights, extensive use of LED lights, floors made from recycled concrete and low-flow toilets and faucets to reduce water use in restrooms.
