The day arrived. The day your child leaves for college. Some of us have been through the process before with other children, but today was the day to move our youngest into her dorm room. Lots of changes ... for everyone. It was a long and busy day. Long lines of cars, long lines to wait for the elevator, and long lines to add your cardboard and trash to the dumpsters.
I have to commend the organization involved in move-in day. Sure, there were lines and dorm rooms can get pretty crowded when the families are all there to help (at the same time), but everyone was professional and courteous and helpful.
So tonight I left my youngest to start the next phase of her life. She'll get unpacked, get things organized, make new friends, probably have a few moments where she misses home and her own bed, AND she'll grow and mature right before my eyes.
Many parents are experiencing this same phenomenon this week. We knew it would come and it has. We'll trust that we've done our job and given them the tools they need. We'll also welcome them back with a hug any time they want to come home.
