Recently I've been reading a lot of Facebook posts that seem to have a theme. 'My son leaves for college in 3 weeks.' 'My son leaves in a week.' '19 days til move in day, where did my summer go?' 'Today I bought the mini-fridge and the microwave.' 'Who is my new roommate anyway?'
It's that time of year alright. Even if you don't have a son or daughter leaving for college some time this month, you'll know by the sales and advertisements in the newspapers. There's the 5-in-1 bedding sets that come complete with X-Long Twin Sheets, the shower caddy, the computers, and of course the college apparel.
Today I walked by the office supply aisle with my daughter (a soon to be college freshman) and yearned for the days when all we had to worry about was what color notebooks to get and which backpack to commit to for the year. Because, of course, we all know that the right backpack set the tone for the entire year. Things weren't necessarily easier back then, just a different set of choices and options.
We're entering into the next season of our lives. Our kids will be leaving for college and some of us will wander into those unchartered areas of empty nesting. Are we ready? Who knows. Like our kids, we may think we are. We'll have our exciting times and our lonely times, but I'm going to look at it as an adventure - for my daughter and for my husband and I.
