Nearly 15 UCS students are going to write about a week of new discoveries when they pen how they spent their summer vacation.
The students experienced everything science as part of a week-long camp at Velocity Jr., coordinated by Detroit Mad Science.
"We want students to explore science and have fun doing it," said Jessica Fellows, a Mad Science instructor.
The camp, called Science Extravaganza, allowed students to engage in fun activities designed around chemistry, the natural world, engineering and complex machinery.
Early to upper-elementary students experienced various hands-on activities built around each scientific concept.
Camp activities included making ice cream, chalk, a life-sized paper mache’ fort and bath fizzers.
"I really like science and I wanted to learn new things," said Schuchard sixth grader Gabriella Pejas. "Chemistry is my favorite - I really enjoy chemical reactions."
Jeannette Junior High School student Kimberly Schummer thought that the camp moved her a step closer to her dream of becoming a meteorologist.
"It helped me figure out why things happen," she said.
Science Extravaganza is one of the first programs offered this summer through Velocity Jr., a partnership of Utica Community Schools, the City of Sterling Heights and Macomb Community College.
The partnership is a complement to the economic development efforts housed at the Velocity Collaboration Center in Sterling Heights, a center for business incubation and economic development, targeting defense, homeland security and advanced manufacturing.
