Students are being drawn to a series of art classes being offered in Utica Community Schools this summer.
UCS Community Education has scheduled nearly 10 drawing classes for students up to 12 years of age at sites throughout the district.
The classes are among the most popular summer enrichment programs, giving students like Oakbrook Elementary’s Piper McMartin a chance to pursue her love of drawing.
"I really like how you learn to mix different colors together to create something new," she said.
McMartin participated last week in a junior cartoon workshop, coordinated through the Young Rembrandts program for 5 to 7-year old students.
The workshop allowed students to develop basic skills by creating four to five drawings each day. Students learned techniques for drawing animals, creating expressions, and giving life to inanimate objects like a hot dog or piece of bread.
"They are learning new skills and are being challenged enough so that it is a fun activity," said teacher Jessica Smigels.
For McMartin, who is a Sponge Bob fan, the course also gave her family some new pieces of art to display on their refrigerator.
“I have had a lot of fun,” she said.
