A group of young Utica Community Schools elementary students are digging up new fun at a Velocity Jr. camp.
The students in grades kindergarten through fifth are studying everything prehistoric by taking part in a "Dino Dig" course, sponsored by the College For Kids program through Macomb Community College.
"This phenomenon of dinosaurs is so big - it's great to see the wonder in their eyes," said teacher Timothy Corbett.
Students in the week-long program study the three eras of dinosaurs – the Triassic, Jurassic and the Cretaceous periods.
Through a series of crafts, the students learn more about the types of dinosaurs, how they lived, the geography of the world during their time, and how today's animals contain some of the traits of prehistoric species.
“I try to give them as much information as possible,” Corbett said.
The course also builds on the natural enthusiasm of the students for dinosaurs.
“I like that some of them can fly,” said one student.
