Beaumont is offering a new monthly support group
for those with Chiari malformation, a neurological condition where the brain
tissue is pushed down into the spinal canal, starting June 13. The meetings
will provide patients and their caregivers insight into conditions, side
effects and other helpful hints related to Chiari malformation and associated
conditions.
Second Thursday of every month, starting June

The Neuroscience Center of Excellence experts at
Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak are offering a new monthly support group for those
with Chiari malformation. The program will provide patients and their
caregivers insight into symptoms, side effects and other helpful information
related to Chiari and associated conditions including tethered cord syndrome and syringomyelia.
Beaumont’s Chiari Malformation Education and
Support Group will include clinical specialists to address new topics each
month. Clinical experts in neurosurgery, neurology, rehabilitation and
others will be available to address those who have had surgery, are scheduled
for surgery, are experiencing new symptoms or want to learn more about the
condition.
The first support group will meet June 13, from
5 to 6 p.m., in the Surgical Learning Center classroom at Beaumont, Royal
Oak. Gary Trock, M.D., section head, pediatric neurology at Beaumont, Royal Oak
will give a presentation and answer questions on sleep issues.Subsequent
meetings will take place the second Thursday of each month.Chiari malformation
is a neurological condition where the brain tissue is pushed down into the
spinal canal. It occurs in about one in 1,000 people in the United States,
according to the American Association of Neurological Surgeons. The most common
symptoms include severe headaches, balance problems, visual disturbances and
difficulty swallowing.
About Beaumont Neuroscience
The Neuroscience department at Beaumont treats
all neurological conditions of the brain and spine for children and adults
including stroke, epilepsy, Chiari malformation, Parkinson’s disease,
Alzheimer’s disease and migraine, among others. Beaumont also has a number
