VIDEO: Trenton Kids Ring in Spring

Trenton kids made crafts and played games at the Spring Nature Nook Spring Fling at the Cultural Center.

Ever wonder what sound a Spring Peeper frog makes?

Children from the Trenton area found out firsthand what sound a Spring Peeper makes at the Spring Nature Nook Spring Fling held at the Cultural Center Art Barn Saturday.

Jennifer Zaenglein, a naturalist with Wayne County Parks, helped children learn about different types of frogs, birds and plant life that typically become more active in spring.

Children made birdhouses out of milk cartons, frog masks and other arts and crafts related to spring.

"Plants right now, our trees are waking up, and all of those seeds in the ground are going to start waking up and start growing," Zaenglein said. "Our area plants grow much, much more in the springtime than they do in the summer."

About 10 children and their parents made it out to the event to show their appreciation for nature and learn about the different sounds springtime animals make.

Some of the children helped Zaenglein recreate the sounds of different frogs using their mouths and plastic combs.

The children were especially interested in meeting the four live frogs Zaenglein brought in to help them identify the frogs in the wild. One parent asked about raising a tadpole at home.

Zaenglein helped the children make their own birdhouses out of milk cartons and allowed them to decorate them with foam stickers.

Alana Segedi decided her birdhouse should be decorated with tiny dinosaurs and flowers.

After learning about the plant and wildlife that are most active during spring the children went outside for playtime and games.

The event took place from 10 a.m. to noon. The Trenton Department of Parks and Recreation has a bunch of great kid-friendly events planned throughout the spring and summer.
