Troy hate crime suspect, 79, arraigned; family requested police welfare checks (wxyz.com) — A 79-year-old man is accused of threatening four Muslim men with a gun outside the Troy Public Library and has been arraigned on four aggravated hate crime charges, each carrying up to 10 years. Police seized 19 weapons from his home, with several guns still unaccounted for, and his family had repeatedly requested welfare checks over mental health concerns. He remains held on a $500,000 bond, with a court date set for September 24.
4. Michigan's funding gap for English learners, explained (metroparent.com) — Troy families with English learner students may be surprised to learn the Troy School District must cover about 90% of these services from its own general fund because state aid falls far short. A statewide explainer shows how Michigan's funding formula leaves many multilingual students without dedicated support, forcing districts like Troy to stretch local dollars.
