Detroit Country Day School students to perform "Hairspray"
Students bring song and spark to the Tony Award-winning production

The talented student actors and musicians at Detroit Country Day School (DCDS) will present the drama, comedy and energetic musical numbers of the 2002 Broadway hit, “Hairspray.” The musical will debut at 7 p.m. on Friday, March 2, and will run March 3, 9, and 10, with Sunday performances at 2 p.m. on March 4 and 11.
The winner of eight Tony Awards, “Hairspray” is set in Baltimore in 1962. The musical tells the story of teenager Tracy Turnblad’s dream come true–dancing on the popular “Corny Collins Show”–and how she shakes things up along the way, by getting the show integrated and pushing the narrative of equality in Baltimore.
“Every member of the production is excited to perform this award-winning musical that weaves comedy and music together to bring about an important discussion on equality,” said Brett Salamin, Upper School Theatre and Filmmaking instructor and “Hairspray” director. “Our students have been attentive to every aspect of this production, and they’re ready to show our community what they’ve accomplished and to deliver the resonant cultural message of this musical with impact and style.”
