In the news: Detroit, new research is showing that humans need more sleep during the winter months.

The key point here is this: The research is showing that humans experience longer REM sleep in winter and less deep sleep in autumn. The changes in day lengths and light exposure during certain seasons can affect our sleep duration and quality.
Of note, autumn & winter in Michigan can be particularly severe because of the changes in the sunlight!

The big picture: "It is imperative to prioritize quality sleep as an important component of overall health. Taking care of your sleep quality in winter, and other seasons, is crucial. One tip for a good night's rest is to make sure that your bedroom temperature is comfortably cool. Your body will thank you for it! Bad quality of sleep has been linked to many health conditions including diabetes, weight gain, and even heart disease." Dr. Puja Uppal, Family Medicine.
