Typically restaurant goers do not love the idea of waiting to be seated, but I am a firm believer that a little patience goes a long way when you leave feeling 100% satisfied after a meal out. The morning after a night out in Detroit, my husband and I were determined to grab some good eats before heading back to the suburbs. My brother and sister-in-law swear by The Hudson Café and they appreciate delicious, quality food as much as I do, so I trust their taste bud’s judgment. Being known as a “brunch café” and serving only breakfast and lunch, it was perfect timing for us to check it out. We were able to quickly park our car on Woodward and chose to sit outside in the sun for our 50 minute wait even though they have a large and inviting waiting area that doubles as seating for their café counter.
Watching the food arrive at the tables around us made for very difficult decision making when grazing the menu. They have everything and every single plate that came out of the kitchen looked incredible and smelled amazing. The pancakes and orange juice are worth a quick personal mention… fresh squeezed orange juice that forced me to savor every sip and crave more when the glass was empty and pancakes so light, so fluffy, so rich the only thing that made them better was the bottle of warm syrup we were given to drench them with.
We kind of over did it because we wanted to try everything, but really felt like we got huge portions for the cost. Since you HAVE to get the orange juice, it will run you $3.50 for a small and $6.50 for a large (get the large- I wish I had). The club sandwich ($9.50) was stuffed with quality meat, cheese, veggies, honey mustard, and their homemade guacamole. My husband got sweet potato fries and loved every bite of it all. I ordered the Huevos Rancheros ($9.50)specifically because the guy next to me received it and could not stop commenting on how incredible it was. He was right. This was also served with their scrumptious guacamole that I wanted to spoon in my mouth. The best part was our “appetizer”… we hesitantly went with one single original buttermilk pancake over a chocolate chip one (which is not even on the menu) and the waitress caught onto our stress, so she decided to treat us to one of each (no charge for the extra). She went onto explain that the mint was straight from her garden… awesome.

Needless to say, I am now obsessed with this place. I think everyone needs to try it. The Hudson Café gives off a very inviting feeling. The high ceilings and cozy tables give it the idea that it is bigger than it is. There is a Café Bar to the right when you walk in, where you can grab a coffee, baked good, or pick up some carry out. We saw a number of people ride their bikes or walk up to grab their carryout… I came to resent them for the simple fact that they have access to breakfast or lunch here as often as they’d like.
