The Renaissance Fencing Club Honors West Bloomfield Four Year Old as Its Youngest Member

Thursday was a special day for Cydney--Ellle Ericson, a four year old from West Bloomfield, Mi. Not only did she get to go to the Renaissance Fencing Club in Troy to practice and hang out with her friends, but she was surprised by an award from the club for being it’s youngest fencer.

The award was originally suggested by her coach , Wojtech Radz, to recognize the progress she has made since starting fencing just under a year ago Head Sabre Coach Todd Dressell immediately agreed with the idea. “Cydney is our youngest fencer here at the club - having started so young and learning so quickly has made it a challenge to find kids of her age to fence with - and she was getting a little frustrated because she didn’t have anyone to compare her progress to. Presenting her this award was a way to impress on her just how unique her abilities are for someone her age.” Her mother, Mary, is impressed with her development over the last year as well. “Fencing has really improved her focus, she has a much longer attention span than she had in the past. When she first started working with Coach Radz she was only able to make it partway through the lesson without having to take a break. Now her attention lasts the full amount of time.”

Soon Cydney will begin practicing with the other fencers in the clubs Mini-Musketeer program, which is for beginning fencers from five to seven years of age. She is excited about the move - and not the least bit apprehensive about changing from a private lesson environment to a larger class. She is looking forward to fencing with her friend Addison, and knows that she will continue to do well. “Fencing is fun for me because I’m smart and good at listening to instructions”.
