'Favorites with Friends' Closes HVCA Classical Series

Karen Roberts’ Favorites with Friends will close out Huron Valley Council for the Arts’ Classical Series at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 20.

Doors open at 6:30 p.m. for the concert, which takes place in the council’s gallery/performance space, 205 W. Livingston Road in Highland Township.

Karen Roberts, an active soloist in Metro Detroit, explained: “Favorites with Friends is a collaboration of some of my finest musician friends performing a selection of our most beloved compositions, from Baroque to
Broadway.”

It includes works by J.S.Bach, Mozart, Bellini, Copland, Bolcom, Hogan, Gershwin and more, she said. Roberts added other members include Paula Moore on piano, mezzo-soprano Patti Marshall-Doane, Darlene Kuperus, piano, trumpeter Dr. Mark V. Flegg, Holly Clemens and Deborah Ash, flute, and her husband, baritone Stephen Roberts.

"In this age of American Idol, The Voice, and other reality shows which continue to bring attention to popular, country, soul and other modern styles of vocal music, I feel our society, and especially our children, are not being exposed to the beauty, complexity and power of classical vocal music,” Roberts said. “I am thankful for the Huron Valley Council for the Arts, and their commitment to preserving and making available classical music to our community, and I am happy to contribute towards their goal.”
