Lakeland Leadership Students Present Every 15 Minutes Program

Program aims at preventing drinking and driving.

Leadership Students presented the "Every 15 Minutes" program to the entire student body on Wednesday.

The program is based off the fact that, "every 15 minutes a person under the age of 18 dies of an alcohol related car crash."

The students learned about the perils of drinking and driving drunk through a series of presentations by junior Heather Craft, senior Alex Sokoll, Oakland County Probation Officer Alex Black and Barb Workman from the Huron Valley Optimist Club.

Craft and Sokoll shared messages they wrote as if they had been killed by a drunk driver prior to the prom. Black told the students what happens if a student is arrested for drunk driving, including the approximate $10,000 in court and insurance costs.

Workman shared how her life changed on May 31, 1997 when her husband Gene was killed by a drunk driver. Workman challenged the students to be the generation that makes the change. She gave all the students and staff a homework assignment: give someone you love a hug today.
