Cronkhite's large-scale paintings capture cloud formations in the moments before a storm, focusing on form, color, and contrast. His contemporary handling of a traditional subject matter conjures scenes of wild beauty with great depth of feeling. Though the pieces are powerful in scale, they require close examination to observe all the subtle variations in color and tone. Simultaneously realistic and abstract, the pieces offer much to the contemplative viewer.
Inspired by 17th century Dutch painters, Rembrandt in particular, Donald has lately taken interest in the vibrant colors and brush strokes of early to mid 20th century modern art. "I like to use soft, fluid brush strokes in parts of my paintings, and loose, irregular brush strokes in other areas. Sometimes loose brushwork presents a greater illusion of realism than a work that's completely polished."
Donald Cronkhite has exhibited in galleries in metro-Detroit, Chicago, New York, and San Antonio.
