Matt Powers Heavy-Hitting Wyandotte Baseball Team

Junior Hunter Matt's performance at the plate led the Bears to a 19-13 overall record and an appearance in the district title game.

Hunter Matt led the way Saturday as the baseball team crushed and advanced to play for the district title.

Against the Warriors, Matt went 4-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored. He also playing stellar defense in left field.

The performance was typical for Matt, who stood out in a potent offensive attack that put up 244 runs in 2011. He finished the season hitting .505 with two homeruns, 40 RBIs and 28 runs scored.

Wyandotte coach Brian Cotner said Matt’s dedication to constant improvement is the reason for his success.

“Hunter’s work ethic is unmatched,” Cotner said. “I am continually impressed by what I see from him. He has worked so hard to get where he is today.”

Matt also is a standout linebacker on the Roosevelt football team and will head into the fall as co-captain for the second straight year.

His performance on the gridiron has brought him attention from several college scouts.

1. Who is your favorite teacher at Roosevelt and why?

My favorite teacher at Roosevelt is Mrs. Zalewski because it’s always a good time in that class. There's never a dull moment.

2. Who is your favorite professional athlete and why?

My favorite professional athlete is Ray Lewis (Baltimore Ravens linebacker) because he is a big time player. He is constantly watching film and knows the offense as well as the quarterback knows the defense.

3. What is your favorite place to hang out?

My favorite place to hang out is at my house with my friends.

4. What are your plans after graduation?

My plans after graduation are to play Division I football and earn my degree. Hopefully I make it to the National Football League.

5. What has been your favorite moment so far of playing sports at Roosevelt?

My favorite moment playing sports so far at Roosevelt has got to be beating Southgate this year for the Downriver League title. Everything about that game was perfect–two undefeated teams, sold out stadium and a team full of great guys.
