Roosevelt Baseball Opens Downriver League Action with a Win
Wyandotte quickly shook off a rough first inning Tuesday and defeated Taylor Truman 7-2 on the road.
opened Downriver League play Wednesday with a 7-2 victory at Taylor Truman.
Senior Gerald Mayhew started on the mound and recovered from a rocky first inning to help keep the Bears (4-0, 1-0) undefeated this season.
Mayhew threw 36 first inning pitches, giving up two runs on four hits and two walks. Through the next five, he held Truman scoreless, allowing only three base runners.

Head coach Brian Cotner said the day’s strong winds and unfamiliar field conditions affected Mayhew early. However, Mayhew has an ability to adapt himself in such situations, Cotner said.
“He needed to make some adjustments (and) I don’t need to tell him much,” Cotner said.

After going down 2-0 early, Wyandotte tied the game in the third. Sophomore Devan Stewart led off the inning with a triple. He later scored, along with senior Travis Rodery, following a Cougar error.
The Bears took control of the game in the fifth, sending 10 hitters to the plate.
Junior Hunter Matt knocked in the inning’s first two runs, scoring Rodery and senior Ben Mekolon. Two batters later, a drive by senior Chase Schmittou brought Matt around to score.
Mayhew then stepped to the plate and helped his own cause, driving in Schmittou and senior Steve Caldwell.
Mayhew’s big hit gave Wyandotte a 7-2 lead and locked up his first pitching victory of the season.
“We have good bats on this team,” Mayhew said. “I knew we were going to come back in this game.”

Rodery went 3 for 4 with two stolen bases and two runs scored. Matt was 2 for 4 with two RBI and a run scored. Schmittou finished the day going 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored.
A Look Ahead
Wyandotte takes on division rival Southgate Anderson at 4 p.m. Wednesday at home. On Saturday, the Bears travel to Ann Arbor Huron for a double header, with the first game beginning at 11 a.m.
