Accomplishment: Emma won a Dearborn Youth Symphony Scholarship. Musicians from the symphony are awarded scholarships based on ability, talent and attendance. Recipients may use the money for anything related to music, including instruments, lessons and camp. Emma will use her scholarship money to attend the Michigan American String Teachers Association summer camp. It is the first time she is going to overnight camp, and she said she is excited.

Key to Awesomeness: Emma said she owes her success to lots of practice and the support of her family. She also credits her cello teacher, Mike Karoub, and her piano teacher, Wendy Riemers, for her success. Emma has been playing piano since she was 4 and cello since she was 7. This is the second year she has played with the Dearborn Youth Symphony and she said she plans on playing with them until she reaches the age limit of 18. Emma said she likes playing the cello because it isn’t a common instrument. She loves music and wants to be a music teacher when she grows up. She also writes her own music and is working on putting together a string quartet with her friends. When she isn’t playing and making music, Emma loves to read and studies ballet.
