Wyandotte Baseball Season Ends with District Loss to Southgate
The Bears started the day with a victory over Woodhaven, but were knocked off in the second game by Southgate Anderson.
won its first game of district playoffs on Saturday with a 14-3 win over host Woodhaven. In the second game, Southgate Anderson handed the Bears (19-13, 10-6) a 14-9 defeat to take the district title and end the team’s season.
In the first game, Wyandotte took an early 4-0 lead against Woodhaven, then blew the game wide open in the fourth inning with nine runs.
Senior Travis Rodery had two fourth-inning hits and two RBIs. Senior , senior Ben Mekolon, junior Devon Jones and sophomore Devan Stewart all drove in fourth-inning runs as well.

Jones started the game on the mound and was only needed for three innings. Schmittou came on in relief in the fourth and held the Warriors down long enough to invoke the mercy rule and take the 14-3 victory in only five innings.
Jones was back on the hill starting against Southgate in the second game. This time, however, the Titans' bats and some fielding mistakes had Wyandotte down 6-0 in the first inning.

The Bears answered with three first-inning runs, getting a RBI each from senior Steve Caldwell, junior Tyler Groat and junior Joe Zulewski.
In several games this season, a designated hitter was used for Zulewski. However, on Saturday he batted fifth in the lineup in both games.
“I felt pretty confident hitting today,” Zulewski said.
Wyandotte was able to keep it close until the sixth inning, but were then plagued with more fielding problems and gave up five runs in the inning.
In the seventh, a comeback attempt fell short and the Bear season ended with a 14-9 defeat.
“We played well in our first game,” Wyandotte coach Brian Cotner said. “We didn’t play to the same level (against Southgate). “They played better than us, that’s why they won.”
Game Leaders
Rodery ended the day 5-for-7 with three RBIs and four runs scored. Junior Hunter Matt was 5-for-9 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Schmittou was 3-for-6 with three RBIs and two walks.
