Wyandotte City Council Restricts Use of Fireworks

Ordinance changes limit the use of consumer fireworks in Wyandotte and give the city more enforcement power.

Wyandotte City Council voted unanimously Monday night to change the city’s ordinance regulating the use of fireworks.

In conjunction with this, the council also amended the city’s littering and noise ordinances.

In January, a new state law went into effect allowing for the sale of certain fireworks that were once illegal in Michigan, such as bottle rockets and Roman candles.

The move by Wyandotte City Council comes in response to resident complaints this summer. Issues have been raised in Wyandotte, and throughout , with safety, noise and debris left behind.

Key aspects of the Wyandotte ordinance changes are as follows:

  • Limit the use of consumer fireworks to national holidays and the day before and after.
  • Restrict the use of consumer fireworks from 11:00 p.m. to 9:00 a.m. in locations that would result in disrupting the peace or sleep of residents.
  • Prohibit the discharge of fireworks upon another's property.
  • Provide emergency powers for the police and fire chief to restrict fireworks if an immediate danger exists.
  • Allow a cost recovery against the user of the fireworks if the city has to respond to an injury or fire caused by the fireworks.
  • Prohibit the discharge of fireworks from public property and require permission from a private property owner to discharge fireworks from their property.

The city can impose a fine up to $500 against those who violate the noise ordinance. Also, those who who fail to clean up all residue, deposits and debris from their fireworks are also subject to a fine of up to $500 from the city.
